Joel Douek has been an artist in one form or another throughout his life. He is drawn to weathered wood and metal, exploring their contrast with gold and other metal leaf. He finds fascination and beauty in the natural processes of aging—the rusting of metals into vibrant colors and the complex textures found in old, reclaimed woods.

His work explores the innate artistry within these expressions of natural impermanence, often contrasted with the enduring permanence of gold. He believes that art can speak to the heart and the senses in ways that extend beyond words.

At times, he describes his life as a string of transcendental or spiritual experiences. Much of his creative work has been an effort to bring others into that same sense of discovery and heightened perception. Whether through music, visual art, sculpture, multichannel sound, or spatial audio, this impulse has underscored everything he has created. He continually reaches for experiences that allow others to see and feel what he sees—and remains equally interested in learning from what others may perceive differently.

There is no conscious or overt message in his work. Instead, his hope is simply that people connect with it directly: sharing a fascination with natural forms, materials, textures, and colors—a link from his subconscious to that of the viewer, without the need for explanation or reason.

As he puts it: “I am not the artist. Nature is.”
